Do you have Poly-B?
Grey plastic pipes from the '80s and '90s are a hidden risk
Poly-B, or polybutylene, was the standard supply pipe in Okanagan homes built from the late 1970s through the mid 1990s. Chlorine in municipal water breaks the grey plastic down from the inside, so it turns brittle and can leak or burst without warning. Many insurers now refuse coverage on a house that still has it, or sharply limit what they will pay on a water claim.
How to spot it
- Grey flexible plastic pipe, usually joined with copper or plastic crimp fittings
- Often visible near the water heater, or where the water lines enter the home
